Menorca is the second largest and by far and away least developed of the Spanish Balearic Islands. The Island is also more family friendly than the others and has pretty much as many golden sandy beaches as Mallorca and Ibiza put together.
There are two distinct sides to Menorca, with the South containing more high quality holiday resorts and the North having a more rustic feel, with many fishing villages and endemic communities. This delightful island has not suffered at the hands of the tour operators, as have many areas of Spain and, even during the high holiday season; it is possible to find empty beaches and lush green forests.
The capital of Menorca is the ancient port town of Mahón, which hosts the second deepest natural harbour in the world and also a fashionable shopping area in the old part of the town. The second city of Menorca, Ciutadella, is more typically a meandering Spanish town, with many old winding streets leading to grand old houses and ancient architecture. The third town of the island, Alaior, is equally charming and home to the important Menorcan cheese industry. It is close to Na Macaret and well worth a visit whilst staying.
In recent years Menorca has grown more and more upmarket and now sports many high quality restaurants right across the island. Getting around Menorca is easy and remember, the Island is only 23 miles wide and 14 miles deep. Given this fact, it is amazing that Menorca manages to pack so many good things into such a small space.
